During my visit, I first thought that this modern bridge was Yingen Bridge, but then I found the real one hid behind the wall after walking through the modern “Yingen Bridge”. The ancient Yingen Bridge (which is the real and famous one) has been blocked by concrete walls that people cannot walk through. The bridge looks really deserted now. Yingen Bridge is located in the entrance of Xiguo Canal to the Shaoxing City downtown, the western entrance of waterway to Shaoxing. In the ancient times, when Chinese Emperors went to Shaoxing, the people and officers in the city would all gather here to welcome the kings; thus the bridge was named “Yingen Bridge”(in Mandarin, “Yingen” means greeting and celebrate). When the famous revolutionist Sun Yat-sen visited Shaoxing, the public greeted him also at the bridge. Since this bridge used to be an important place for trade, Yingen Bridge is also called “Caishi” Bridge (“Caishi” means market in Chinese). The bridge spans nearly 10 meters and is the largest seven-fold side stone arch bridge in Shaoxing.
